The Woodland Trust Tree of the Year: Honouring Our Natural Giants

By Helen Godfrey, Account Director

Each year the Woodland Trust runs the Tree of the Year national contest, celebrating our magnificent trees in the UK and the importance they have in supporting wildlife, cleaning the air and brightening up our landscapes. In 2024 there is a shortlist of 12 magnificent Oaks to decide between with voting open until 11.59pm on 21st October.

A Personal Journey Through My Favourite Trees

In honour of this year’s competition, I’ve pulled together a roundup of pictures of some of my favourite trees taken over the years. Each tree holds its own story, and the Woodland Trust competition shines a light on the special connection we have with them.🌳

Autumn Splendour: The First to Change in My Local Park

Autumn is my favourite time of year and my local park has an arboretum full of magnificent trees. This is always the first tree to change colour, marking the changing seasons, and provides a perfect backdrop for my dog Rocket to pose in front of!

Shelter for Wildlife and a Summer Retreat for Cattle

Every summer a herd of cattle is released to roam in certain areas, to help manage the grassland and vegetation (and to judge my poor running efforts!) The trees provide them with shelter from the sun and rain, and they love to use them as scratching posts.

A Cinematic Backdrop

Not strictly one on its own – but an avenue of pine trees which creates a dramatic centre point of the forest. The beautiful broadleaf woodland has been used as a favourite filming backdrop for many blockbusters, including Harry Potter, Tomb Raider and Jurassic World Dominion.

Soho Square: A Green Oasis in the Heart of London

Finally our own local landmark of Soho Square. The gardens provide a green oasis in the centre of the west-end with mighty plane trees towering over the square. A great spot for a lunchtime stroll as it’s right outside our office, and provides a bit of well needed tranquillity in the bustling city centre!

Trees are more than just part of the scenery – they’re vital to our environment and hold a special place in our hearts. As the Woodland Trust’s contest celebrates the UK’s finest oaks, take a moment to find your favourite and appreciate the trees around you. Your very own “Tree of the Year” could be right outside your door!🌳
